EPS High Energy Particle Physics Prizes

The High Energy and Particle Physics Prize, for an outstanding contribution to High Energy Physics in an experimental, theoretical or technological area, will be awarded to one or more persons or to collaboration(s).

The Giuseppe and Vanna Cocconi Prize, for an outstanding contribution to Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology in the last fifteen years, in an experimental, theoretical or technological area, will be awarded to one or more individuals or to one or more collaborations.

The Young Experimental Physicist Prize, for outstanding work by one or more early career experimental physicist (maximum of 8 years - excluding career interruptions - of research experience following the PhD) in the field of Particle Physics and/or Particle Astrophysics.

The Gribov Medal, for outstanding work by an early career researcher (maximum of 8 years - excluding career interruptions - of research experience following the PhD) in Theoretical Particle Physics and/or Field Theory.

The Outreach Prize, for outstanding achievement in outreach, including education and the promotion of diversity, in connection with High Energy Physics and/or Particle Astrophysics.

The Prizes will be awarded in a ceremony on 27 July 2021, during the International Europhysics Conference on HEPP, to be held as an online conference. More detailed regulations and the list of previous prize winners may be consulted below:

Recipients of the 2019 HEPP Division Prizes

The 2019 High Energy and Particle Physics Prize , for an outstanding contribution to High Energy Physics, is awarded to the CDF and D0 Collaborations for the discovery of the top quark and the detailed measurement of its properties.

The 2019 Giuseppe and Vanna Cocconi Prize, for an outstanding contribution to Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, is awarded to the WMAP and Planck Collaborations for providing high-precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization anisotropies, leading to detailed information on properties of the universe and tests of cosmological models and fundamental physics.

The 2019 Gribov Medal, for outstanding work by a young physicist in Theoretical Particle Physics and/or Field Theory, is awarded to Douglas Stanford for his pioneering work on quantum chaos and its relation to the near-horizon dynamics of black holes.

The 2019 Young Experimental Physicist Prize, for outstanding work by one or more young physicists in the field of Particle Physics and/or Particle Astrophysics, is awarded to Josh Bendavid for outstanding and innovative contributions to detector operations, software development, data analysis and detector upgrades of the CMS experiment and to Lesya Shchutska for outstanding contributions to experimental activities in particle physics, from the design and simulation of novel experiments, test-beam operations and analyses, to data analyses and their final theoretical interpretations.

The 2019 Outreach Prize, for outstanding outreach achievement connected with High Energy Physics and/or Particle Astrophysics, is awarded to to Rob Appleby, Chris Edmonds and Robyn Watson for the Tactile Collider Project that brings particle physics to blind and visually impaired schoolchildren through touch and sound.
